4. The Fourth Seal: A Rider on a Pale Horse (Revelation 6:7-8)

Hunger, the Second Whip of God: He who looks at flows of refugees silently migrating into hopelessness or flies in an arid region where men are gathering herbs or peeling the bark form trees so as to have something to eat, may get a sense of the meaning of a famine. When locust swarms invade and devour like a living roller everything growing in the fields, then no food will remain. When party officials according to their ideology squelch peoples own initiative, then even fertile countries begin to starve.

Yet at the same time there is an overproduction of wheat in Canada and in USA. In some EU countries large quantities of apples, oranges and tomatoes are being destroyed so as to maintain their prices. Butter mountains and milk lakes are being deliberately reduced so as to reduce their production. In 1990 in Australia about two million sheep (!) had been driven into mass pits and killed by machine guns by order of the government, as the expenses for food and shipping were higher than the sales profit. There is something wrong! On the one hand hunger and malnutrition prevail, on the other hand affluence. Unfortunately, only a few people are prepared to take sacrifices or to serve. Not only God but also men may boil in rage in view of such a situation.

Overpopulation of the earth: The problem of hunger is based on an unlimited population growth in many places. Scientists speak of a sharp rise of the population curve of the countries of Africa and Asia between 1940 and 1970. Before this time the population growth of most of the nations was steady and clear. With the access of medical care, hygiene and sanitation the mortality rate of developing countries decreased, while the birth rate jumped up. The year book of statistics of foreign countries (1995) edited by the Federal German Bureau of Statistics in Wiesbaden documents this development. Several countries may serve as example of the whole situation.

The population growth of some nations as calculated by UN, based on a middle population growth rate is as follows:

The population figures of the European industrial countries stagnate or decrease:

The population of other West-European countries such as France or Italy
decreases due to the maelstrom of affluence in their affluent societies.

If Jesus does not return before 2050 and no severe catastrophes occur, the following prognoses of the United Nations will apply to the 20 most populous nations in 2050 (population data, millions):

2.China1605
3.Pakistan381
4.USA349
5.Nigeria332
6.Indonesia319

Who will feed these peoples? Water, land and resources are limited world-wide. So hunger is pre-programmed. Human migration is to be expected. After 50 years not a single European country is likely to be counted to the 20 most populous countries of the earth.

Dying of people due to starving in countries of the Third World has taken on an alarming extent. Millions of children and adults are dying of malnutrition each year. Hunger hurts! Each starving individual is an accusation of mankind.

Many are screaming in their doom for the rider on the white horse. Only a few lift their eyes to the Lamb in the throne of God.

PRAYER: Holy Creator, the world population is growing quickly, and soon there will be no sufficient water, bread, and place to dwell in. Dirt increases everywhere and the atmosphere is becoming poisoned with nuclear gases and radiation. Come Holy Lord, reap Your world and give mothers believing children that "the salt of the earth" may not end.

QUESTION:

  1. Why does poverty grow in the world?
