1. Jesus’ Entrance into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-9)

MATTHEW 21:6-9
6 The disciples went, and did just as Jesus commanded them, 7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their clothes on them; and he sat on them. 8 A very great multitude spread their clothes on the road. Others cut branches from the trees, and spread them on the road. 9 The multitudes who went before him, and who followed kept shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
(2 Kings 9:13, Psalm 118:25-26)

Christ came in accordance with the old promises. He entered Jerusalem in the procession of the King of Love, bearing God’s peace in His heart, riding on a donkey rather than a horse as kings and conquerors did. The Son of God came in goodness and humility, not in judgment, wrath, or severity. He came to win those who were going astray. As a High Priest and the Lamb of God, He completed atonement for the sins of the people by Himself.

Yet, the multitudes did not understand the purpose of His first coming. They expected a new age of ease, power, and glory. So they cheered with the words specified for the chief priest in reconciling the nation with God. But they sought God’s assistance and blessing for the purpose of overcoming the occupying Romans, instead of receiving God’s forgiveness into their hearts.

Those who take Christ for their King should lay all they are and all they have under His feet, just as the crowd spread their clothes on the road. When Christ comes, it must be said to the soul, Bow down, that he will go over (Isaiah 51:23). While the disciples laid their clothes on the donkey, some of the people laid their clothes, along with tree branches, on the road. This was traditional behavior during the Feast of Tabernacles, which was intended to represent liberty, victory, and joy. That feast is also spoken of in the context of gospel times (Zechariah 14:16).

Today, Christ comes to people by means of His Spirit. Do you recognize this privilege? He communicates God’s grace to you for the purpose of dwelling in you. What will you do? Will you worship Him? Do your lips praise Him? Do you put yourself and your abilities at His disposal, as the people spread their clothes under His feet? The Son of God is coming. How will you receive Him?

During this time, the Jews were living under the yoke of the Roman colonization. They received Christ with zeal, hoping to obtain power from Him against the Romans. But He did not promise them political support, nor did He offer to help them to achieve their worldly aims. Likewise, the Lord will not necessarily raise you to high rank or grant you material riches. He would rather carry you from the temporal to the eternal, from selfishness to love. If you receive Him for worldly reasons, it is likely that you will soon reject Him. But if you beg His pardon for your sins and seek His peace, He will open your heart and dwell in it. Then everlasting joy will fill your life.

PRAYER: Father, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. Purify me together with many hearts and minds of our nation that You may come in and live in us forever. Sanctify us with Your power. Do not only pass by us, but also abide with us and with all those that seek You with expectation around the world.

QUESTION:

  1. What can we learn from Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem?
